There is a growing body of evidence that a particular type of antacid – called proton pump inhibiters (PPIs) – may cause, or at least contribute to, several common health conditions including dementia.
A recent study published in Scientific American stated, “the association is plausible and warrants further investigation given the debilitating nature of dementia and lack of effective treatments for it. ”
This ought to raise some concern for us given our growing aging population and the frightening prospect of dementia.
Given that there are many other treatment options for heartburn and reflux that are safe and effective I recommend that you take pause before reaching for that purple pill.
